(PHILADELPHIA – January 29, 2010) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $7,720 environmental education grant to the Prince George’s County Board of Education for a teacher workshop on Monarch Butterflies.

The school district will use funding for a workshop that trains elementary and high school teachers about the biology, history and ecology of the Monarch Butterfly.

“Unique environmental education programs like this help teach students about nature’s beauty and inspires youngsters to become lifelong stewards of the environment,” said Shawn M. Garvin, administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

This workshop will provide teachers with skills necessary to facilitate the raising of Monarch Butterflies in their classrooms so they can provide students a unique hands-on learning experience.

Since 1992, EPA has provided more than $2.5 million annually to local organizations and schools nationwide including about $3.5 million in 2009. These grants have funded education programs of nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
